Biological Age Predictors: The Status Quo and Future Trends
Summary Can tests estimate how old your body is, beyond your birthday? Show / hide ↓
This paper reviewed ways to estimate biological age, meaning how old a person’s body seems to be rather than their calendar age. It compared tools using DNA methylation, chemical tags that help control genes, blood tests, body measurements, scans, and other biological data. These tools are often called biological-age clocks because they combine many measurements into an age estimate. The review found that some measures are linked with illness and death risk, but results vary between tests and groups of people. This was not a new experiment, and it did not show that lowering a biological-age score will extend life.
What this means for you: You do not need to buy a biological-age test based on this review alone. These scores may help researchers, but their usefulness for personal decisions and treatments remains uncertain.
