DOUBLE-BLIND, RANDOMISED CROSSOVER STUDY WITH ACUTE PERFORMANCE ENDPOINTS 2026

In 20 elite male wrestlers, taurine given before a conditioning protocol improved acute Wingate power versus placebo and control sessions.

Summary Can taurine improve short bursts of athletic power? Show / hide ↓

Researchers studied 20 highly trained male wrestlers, with each athlete completing three different sessions. In one session they took taurine, an amino-acid supplement, before a strength workout; in another they took a sugar placebo, or inactive look-alike treatment, before the same workout; and in the third they did neither. The workout involved heavy squats and hip thrusts, using weights equal to 85% of the heaviest weight they could lift once. Five minutes later, the wrestlers completed a Wingate test, an all-out cycling test lasting only a short time. Their highest power output was about 17% higher with taurine than with the other sessions, and power relative to body weight was about 22% higher, but the study measured only immediate performance and did not test taurine by itself.

What this means for you: This provides an early signal, not a strong reason to buy taurine. It involved only 20 elite male wrestlers, tested one workout, and cannot show whether taurine helps people who do not use the strength workout or whether it improves long-term fitness or health.

This double-blind crossover study tested taurine alongside post-activation performance enhancement in 20 elite male wrestlers. Each athlete completed three sessions: control with neither supplementation nor the conditioning protocol, the protocol with sucrose placebo, and the protocol with taurine. In the two protocol sessions, athletes performed three sets of eight squat and hip-thrust repetitions at 85% of one-repetition maximum. Taurine or placebo was given 60 minutes beforehand.

Five minutes after the protocol, participants completed a Wingate anaerobic test. Countermovement-jump tests were performed before the protocol, immediately after Wingate and 5 minutes later. The taurine-plus-protocol condition produced 16.76% higher peak power, p = 0.048, and 22.24% higher power relative to body mass, p = 0.028, compared with the placebo-plus-protocol and control conditions. The abstract also reports lower post-test blood lactate with taurine, but its p-value is incomplete in the supplied text.

This is an acute sports-performance experiment in highly trained men. It did not test daily supplementation, long-term training adaptation, health outcomes or longevity. Because there was no taurine-alone session, the study cannot separate a taurine effect from the combined taurine and conditioning protocol.

Combining taurine with post-activation performance enhancement improved anaerobic performance and supported recovery after high-intensity exercise.
Critic notes

Only 20 elite male wrestlers were tested in acute sessions. Taurine was examined only alongside the conditioning protocol, so its independent effect cannot be determined; the abstract also does not state the taurine dose.
