Hyperbaric oxygen therapy and cellular senescence: mechanisms and evidence review
Summary Does hyperbaric oxygen therapy slow or reverse cellular aging? Show / hide ↓
This was a review of earlier research, not a new experiment with one group of volunteers. It examined hyperbaric oxygen therapy, breathing nearly pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber, and cellular senescence, a state in which cells stop dividing and may release harmful signals. Research in cells, animals, and a small number of people suggested possible changes in aging-related markers, including senescent cells and telomeres, which are protective DNA ends. The studies used different methods, and none showed that the treatment extends human life or reliably improves health.
What this means for you: This review does not provide enough evidence to buy hyperbaric oxygen treatments for general anti-aging purposes. It is an interesting research idea, but the human evidence is limited and mostly relies on biological markers rather than meaningful health outcomes.
