Apolipoprotein B: Bridging the Gap Between Evidence and Clinical Practice

American Heart Association journal review

PRIMARY 2024
Summary Does measuring apolipoprotein B improve heart disease prevention? Show / hide ↓

This article reviewed existing research on apolipoprotein B, or ApoB, a protein found on particles that can build up in artery walls. It compared ApoB with LDL cholesterol, often called bad cholesterol, and other blood tests used to estimate heart disease risk. The authors found that ApoB can sometimes show risk more clearly, especially when LDL cholesterol and the number of harmful particles do not match. This was a review, not a new study, so it did not enroll participants or test a treatment.

What this means for you: ApoB may be a useful blood test when standard cholesterol results do not give a clear picture, but it is not a reason to buy supplements or ignore overall heart risk. Decisions about testing and treatment should still consider blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, family history, and other factors.
