Study
MTHFR gene variants and homocysteine metabolism
Summary Do MTHFR gene changes raise homocysteine and affect health? Show / hide ↓
The researchers reviewed earlier studies about MTHFR gene variants, which are inherited DNA differences, and homocysteine, a substance measured in the blood. They examined how these variants affect folate, also called vitamin B9, and the body’s processing of homocysteine. The evidence suggests that some variants, especially C677T, can slightly raise homocysteine when folate intake is low. The review did not enroll new participants, and links between these gene variants and major diseases were inconsistent.
What this means for you: This does not show that most people need an MTHFR test or special supplements. Getting enough folate through a normal diet or standard supplement is generally more useful than buying products based only on a gene variant, but treatment decisions should follow medical advice.
