PRIMARY 2017
Summary Can intravenous stem cells safely improve frailty in older adults? Show / hide ↓

The researchers gave one intravenous infusion of donor-derived mesenchymal stem cells to 15 older adults with frailty. Mesenchymal stem cells are cells that may help repair tissue or reduce inflammation. The study used increasing doses: 20 million, 100 million, or 200 million cells. Researchers mainly checked safety and also measured walking ability, strength, lung function, and inflammation for six months. No serious problems were linked to the treatment, and some physical measures improved, but there was no untreated comparison group.

What this means for you: This small study suggests the treatment may be safe, but it does not show that stem cells improve frailty. Stem-cell treatments for aging remain experimental, so this is not a reason to buy or seek one outside a properly supervised clinical trial.
