DNA methylation-based biomarkers and the epigenetic clock theory of ageing

Horvath S, Raj K

PRIMARY 2018
Summary Can DNA tags on our genes reveal how quickly we are ageing? Show / hide ↓

The researchers reviewed earlier studies of DNA methylation, chemical tags that help control how genes work. They examined “epigenetic clocks,” computer tools that estimate a person’s biological age from these tags. The review covered human blood and tissue studies, rather than testing a new group of people. These clocks often estimated age fairly well, and some studies linked being biologically older than your actual age with poorer health. The links do not prove that the DNA tags cause ageing or disease.

What this means for you: This research does not show that you should buy an ageing test or supplement. Epigenetic clocks are promising research tools, but they are not yet reliable guides for personal health decisions or proven ways to extend life.
