Inconvenient Truths About Human Longevity

Olshansky SJ, Carnes BA

PRIMARY 2019
Summary Are people really on track to live much longer? Show / hide ↓

The author reviewed human death records and population trends rather than running a new experiment. The review found that life expectancy, the average number of years people live, has risen greatly but is increasing more slowly in the longest-lived countries. Most past gains came from preventing deaths from infections and heart disease. There is no strong human evidence yet that medicines or other treatments can greatly extend the maximum human lifespan.

What this means for you: Do not buy a product that promises dramatic life extension based on this review. Healthy habits and proven medical care still matter, but claims that people will routinely live far beyond 100 remain uncertain.
