Summary Can GLP-1 medicines help people live longer? Show / hide ↓

This is a review of research on GLP-1 medicines, drugs that affect appetite and blood sugar. Large studies in people with obesity, diabetes, or heart disease found that some GLP-1 medicines can cause weight loss and lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Some studies also found fewer deaths during follow-up, but they were not designed to prove that these medicines extend lifespan. Researchers still do not know whether the benefits apply to healthy people or how long they last after stopping treatment.

What this means for you: GLP-1 medicines may improve health and possibly help people live longer, but they are not yet proven longevity drugs. Do not take them solely for life extension without a medical reason and a clinician’s advice.
