Effects of statins on carotid intima-media thickness progression: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Lipid-lowering trials meta-analysis team

RCT 2015
Summary Do statins slow the thickening of arteries in the neck? Show / hide ↓

Researchers combined results from randomized trials comparing statins with a placebo or usual care. The studies included adults taking statins to lower cholesterol. Ultrasound scans measured carotid intima-media thickness, the thickness of the inner layers of the neck arteries. Statins slightly slowed the increase in artery-wall thickness. This measurement is a warning sign of artery disease, but it is not the same as preventing a heart attack or stroke.

What this means for you: Statins may modestly slow changes in artery walls, but this study does not show how much that alone improves lifespan or prevents illness. Do not buy statins or change treatment based on this result alone; discuss them with a clinician based on your overall heart-risk level.
