Aging and inflammatory cytokines: clinical measurement considerations

Clinical geriatrics review team

PRIMARY 2020
Summary Can one blood test show whether aging has caused harmful inflammation? Show / hide ↓

Researchers reviewed how inflammatory cytokines, immune-system messenger proteins, are measured in older adults. This was not a new experiment, so no new group of participants took part. Existing studies suggest cytokine levels often rise with age, but results can change with illness, stress, exercise, timing, and laboratory methods. A single blood test may therefore give an incomplete picture of a person’s long-term inflammation.

What this means for you: Do not buy a supplement or health test based only on one cytokine result. These tests may be useful in research or specific medical situations, but their value for routine aging decisions remains limited.
