Study

Handgrip strength is inversely associated with fatal cardiovascular and all-cause mortality events

Population cohort study team

PRIMARY 2020
Summary Does having a stronger grip predict a longer life? Show / hide ↓

Researchers measured handgrip strength in adults and followed them using health records. They compared grip strength with deaths from cardiovascular disease, meaning problems affecting the heart and blood vessels, and deaths from any cause. People with stronger grips were less likely to die from either cause during follow-up. This was an observational study, so it found a link but cannot show that stronger grip itself prevents death.

What this means for you: Grip strength may be a simple sign of overall muscle and general health. This does not show that buying a handgrip device or increasing grip strength will directly extend your life.
