TNF-alpha signaling and cellular senescence: mechanistic review

Cytokine mechanism review team

PRIMARY 2020
Summary How might TNF-alpha help drive the aging of damaged cells? Show / hide ↓

This review examined laboratory research on TNF-alpha, an immune-system chemical that causes inflammation, and cellular senescence, a state where damaged cells stop dividing but remain active. The researchers brought together findings from studies of human cells, animals, and other laboratory models. These studies suggest that TNF-alpha can contribute to senescence and that senescent cells can also increase inflammation. This was not a treatment trial and did not test a specific product in people.

What this means for you: This work helps explain how long-lasting inflammation might contribute to aging, but it does not show that blocking TNF-alpha will extend human life. You can ignore products making strong anti-aging claims based only on this research.
