Summary Does living in a poorer area affect how frailty changes in old age? Show / hide ↓

Researchers followed very old adults and checked their health and frailty over time. Frailty means having less strength and a lower ability to cope with illness or everyday tasks. They compared people living in more deprived areas with those in better-off areas. People from more deprived areas were more likely to become frail and less likely to recover from frailty. The study also tracked moves between being healthy, becoming frail, recovering, and dying.

What this means for you: This suggests that living conditions and financial disadvantage may affect the risk of frailty, but it does not show that deprivation directly caused it. It does not point to a particular product or treatment to buy, and improving housing, income, and access to care may matter more than supplements marketed for ageing.
