Carotid atherosclerosis imaging in cardiovascular risk stratification
Summary Can neck artery scans improve heart risk estimates? Show / hide ↓
Researchers reviewed earlier studies of imaging the carotid arteries, the large blood vessels in the neck. Ultrasound and other scans can show plaque, fatty buildup in an artery, and artery-wall thickness, which may signal higher heart and stroke risk. Across these studies, carotid plaque often improved risk estimates beyond standard checks such as blood pressure and cholesterol. This was a review of existing research, not a new trial with its own participants.
What this means for you: These scans may help doctors refine risk estimates when the usual information is unclear, but they are not needed for everyone. Do not buy a scan expecting it to prevent a heart attack, because evidence that scanning changes treatment or outcomes is limited.
