IL-6 signaling pathway in inflammaging: mechanistic review

Cytokine signaling review team

PRIMARY 2024
Summary How might IL-6 help drive harmful inflammation as we age? Show / hide ↓

Researchers reviewed earlier studies about IL-6, an immune signal that helps control inflammation, and aging. They examined how this signal may affect cells, tissues, and organs over time. The review suggests that constantly raised IL-6 may contribute to inflammaging, the gradual increase in low-level inflammation that often comes with age. It did not test a treatment or include new human participants, so it cannot show that blocking IL-6 will help people live longer.

What this means for you: This review does not support buying an IL-6 supplement or treatment for longevity. It may help researchers find future treatments, but there is no clear action for healthy people today.
