Sarcopenic obesity and health outcomes: An umbrella review of systematic reviews with meta-analysis
Summary Does having low muscle and excess body fat harm health? Show / hide ↓
Researchers combined findings from many systematic reviews, which are summaries of earlier studies. They looked at adults with sarcopenic obesity, meaning low muscle strength or muscle amount together with excess body fat. Across the reviews, this combination was linked with a higher chance of several problems, including disability, falls, heart and blood-vessel disease, and earlier death. The studies used different definitions and methods, so the size of the risk was not consistent.
What this means for you: This supports maintaining muscle and a healthy amount of body fat through strength exercise, adequate food, and other proven habits. It does not prove that sarcopenic obesity directly causes every health problem, and it does not show that a particular supplement or product will prevent it.
