Summary Does higher HDL cholesterol protect against heart disease and early death? Show / hide ↓

Researchers studied adults with different levels of HDL cholesterol, often called “good cholesterol.” They compared these levels with later heart disease, stroke, and death. The results did not show that steadily raising HDL always lowers these risks. Very low and very high HDL levels were sometimes linked with worse outcomes, but these studies mainly showed links, not proof that HDL itself caused them.

What this means for you: Do not buy supplements or treatments simply to raise HDL cholesterol. Focus instead on proven steps such as not smoking, exercising, and managing LDL cholesterol, often called “bad cholesterol,” blood pressure, and diabetes.
