Study
In Vivo Amelioration of Age-Associated Hallmarks in Aged Mice by Whole-Body Expression of the Yamanaka Factors
PRECLINICAL
2020
Summary Can briefly turning on four genes make old bodies act younger? Show / hide ↓
Researchers genetically modified old mice so they could briefly switch on the Yamanaka factors, four genes that can reset a cell’s identity. They repeatedly activated these genes throughout the animals’ bodies. The treated mice showed improvements in several age-related signs, including gene activity, metabolism, and some tissue-repair measures. The study did not show that this treatment safely extends human life, and the mice were not people.
What this means for you: This is interesting laboratory research, not a treatment to buy or try. Reprogramming cells throughout the body could carry serious risks, including uncontrolled growth and cancer, so it needs much more testing before human use.
