Unproven Stem Cell Interventions Put Patients at Risk

Pew Charitable Trusts

PRIMARY 2021
Summary Are unproven stem cell treatments safe and effective for patients? Show / hide ↓

The authors reviewed reports and scientific evidence about clinics offering stem cell interventions, treatments using cells to repair damaged tissue. They found that many treatments had not been properly tested in clinical trials, studies involving human volunteers. Reports included serious problems such as infections, tumors, blindness, and worsening illness. This was a review and warning, not a new trial with patients.

What this means for you: Do not assume a clinic’s stem cell treatment works just because it is advertised. Choose treatments supported by well-run human studies and proper medical oversight, and be wary of expensive promises.
