Study

AMPK and PPARdelta agonists are exercise mimetics

Narkar VA, Downes M, Yu RT, et al.

PRIMARY 2008
Summary Can experimental drugs make sedentary animals perform like they exercised? Show / hide ↓

Researchers gave sedentary mice two experimental drugs that switch on muscle energy-control systems called AMPK and PPAR-delta. They compared the mice with untreated mice and mice that exercised. The drug-treated mice changed their muscle activity and could run longer on a treadmill, with endurance improving by roughly 44% to 75% depending on the drug. This was a mouse study, not a study of people.

What this means for you: This does not show that these drugs improve human fitness, health, or lifespan. Do not buy exercise-mimetic supplements or use experimental drugs based on this study; regular physical activity remains the proven option.
