Study
Brown adipose tissue activation and thermogenesis: mechanistic review
PRIMARY
2016
Summary Does activating brown fat help the body burn more energy? Show / hide ↓
Researchers reviewed earlier studies on brown adipose tissue, or brown fat, which produces heat by using stored energy. The review covered research in people, animals, and cells rather than recruiting new participants. Cold exposure and certain body signals can activate brown fat and increase heat production. However, it was not clear whether this leads to meaningful weight loss or longer life in people.
What this means for you: This review does not show that buying a cold-exposure product or supplement will improve health. Brown fat is biologically interesting, but practical benefits for people remained uncertain.
