Study
The role of IGF-1 signaling in longevity and aging
PRIMARY
2019
Summary Does changing IGF-1 help people live longer and age better? Show / hide ↓
Researchers reviewed studies of IGF-1, a hormone that helps control growth, body repair, and metabolism. The evidence included animals, laboratory cells, and people, rather than one new group of participants. In some animals, reducing IGF-1 signals increased lifespan. Human studies were mixed, and lower IGF-1 was not consistently linked with healthier or longer lives. The review did not test an IGF-1 drug or supplement.
What this means for you: This does not show that you should buy an IGF-1 supplement or try to lower this hormone. The effects may differ by age, health, and amount of IGF-1, so there is no proven longevity treatment here.
