PGC-1α-mediated regulation of mitochondrial function and physical activity

PRIMARY 2020
Summary Can a muscle protein help mitochondria work better during exercise? Show / hide ↓

Researchers reviewed how PGC-1α, a protein that helps control mitochondria, works in muscle cells. Mitochondria are the cell’s energy factories. This was not a new trial, so no new group of people or animals took part. The evidence suggests that exercise can increase PGC-1α activity and help muscles make and use energy. It did not show that boosting this protein alone makes people healthier or live longer.

What this means for you: This is useful background biology, not a reason to buy a supplement or treatment. Regular physical activity has much stronger direct evidence than products marketed as boosting PGC-1α.
