Metformin's Mechanisms in Attenuating Hallmarks of Aging
Summary Does metformin slow the biological changes linked with aging? Show / hide ↓
This 2022 review brought together findings from cell, animal, and human studies on metformin, a prescription diabetes drug. It examined whether the drug affects the “hallmarks of aging,” a list of biological changes such as damaged cells, ongoing inflammation, and poorer energy control. The authors described possible effects on nutrient-sensing pathways, cell cleanup, inflammation, and blood-vessel health. They did not run a new experiment or enroll participants. Some evidence came from laboratory cells and animals, while human findings were mixed and often involved people with diabetes rather than healthy older adults.
What this means for you: This review suggests possible ways metformin could affect aging, but it does not prove that the drug extends life or keeps healthy people young. Do not buy or take it for longevity without medical advice, since stronger human studies are still needed.
