Tai Chi and health outcomes: an umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses
Summary Can tai chi improve health, balance, mood, or physical function? Show / hide ↓
Researchers combined findings from systematic reviews, which are studies that compare many earlier studies, and meta-analyses, which pool their results. The earlier research included mostly older adults and people with ongoing health problems. Tai chi was linked with better balance, physical function, quality of life, mood, and some measures of heart and brain health. Some reviews also found fewer falls, but results varied and many studies were small or not rigorous enough to be certain.
What this means for you: Tai chi may be a useful, gentle form of exercise, especially for balance and general function, but it is not proven to prevent or treat every health problem. Choose it for enjoyment and regular movement, not because of dramatic health promises.
