Fasting-mimicking diet and stem-cell-based regeneration mechanisms

Summary Can a fasting-mimicking diet help the body repair itself? Show / hide ↓

Researchers reviewed how a fasting-mimicking diet, a short low-calorie diet designed to imitate fasting, might affect stem cells, which can produce replacement cells. Most of the evidence came from mice and laboratory studies, with only limited testing in people. In mice, repeated diet cycles appeared to help some tissues make new blood and immune cells and may support repair. Small human studies found changes in blood markers, but they did not prove that the diet makes people live longer or meaningfully regenerate damaged organs.

What this means for you: You can ignore strong stem-cell claims about this diet for now. Human evidence is limited, and the diet may not be suitable for everyone without medical advice.
