Epigenetic drift underlies epigenetic clock signals, but displays distinct dynamics from epigenetic age

Summary Does random DNA aging explain what epigenetic clocks measure? Show / hide ↓

Researchers analyzed DNA samples from people of different ages. They looked at DNA methylation, chemical tags that help control gene activity, and compared random age-related changes called epigenetic drift with epigenetic clocks, which estimate biological age from these tags. The two measures were related, but they changed in different ways over time. This suggests that drift contributes to clock readings but is not exactly the same thing as epigenetic age.

What this means for you: This is basic research and does not show that any supplement, diet, or test can slow aging. You can ignore it when deciding what to buy or do, because it does not test a treatment or prove a health benefit.
