Health impacts of blood donation: a systematic review
Summary Does donating blood regularly improve or harm your health? Show / hide ↓
Researchers gathered and compared existing human studies on blood donation and health. The studies included regular blood donors and, in some cases, people who did not donate. Regular donation was linked with lower iron stores, especially among frequent donors. Some studies suggested fewer heart problems or longer life, but these results may partly reflect that healthier people are more likely to donate. Overall, the research did not reliably show that donating blood prevents disease or extends life.
What this means for you: Donate blood to help patients, not because it is proven to improve your own health. If you donate often, follow local limits and ask about iron if you feel unusually tired or have other symptoms.
