Links between autophagy and healthy aging

Summary Can better cellular recycling help people age more healthily? Show / hide ↓
This article reviewed research on autophagy, the process cells use to break down and reuse damaged parts. The evidence included studies in cells, animals, and people rather than one new human trial. In laboratory and animal studies, stronger autophagy was often linked with longer life or better health. Human evidence was more limited, so it is not clear whether boosting autophagy directly improves healthy aging.
What this means for you: This does not show that an autophagy supplement or treatment will help you live longer. Healthy habits may affect this process, but the research is not strong enough to justify buying products marketed to boost autophagy.
