A Review of Telomere Attrition in Cancer and Aging
PRIMARY
2025
Summary How does telomere shortening relate to cancer and aging? Show / hide ↓
This review summarized earlier research on telomeres, protective DNA ends that help keep chromosomes stable. It examined how telomere attrition, meaning the gradual shortening of these ends, may change as people age. It also considered links between short or damaged telomeres and cancer. No new group of participants was studied, so the review cannot prove that telomere changes directly cause aging or cancer.
What this means for you: This does not show that buying a telomere test or supplement will extend life or prevent cancer. Telomere health is worth studying, but the findings are not a clear personal action plan.
