HbA1c and all-cause mortality risk among patients with type 2 diabetes
Summary What blood-sugar level is linked with the lowest death risk in type 2 diabetes? Show / hide ↓
Researchers reviewed health records from adults with type 2 diabetes. They used HbA1c, a blood test showing average blood sugar over the past two to three months, and compared it with later deaths from any cause. Death rates were generally lowest in a middle HbA1c range. Very high levels were linked with more deaths, while unusually low levels were also linked with higher risk in some analyses. This was an observational study, so it cannot prove that HbA1c itself caused these differences.
What this means for you: Do not chase one HbA1c number or buy a supplement based on this study. Work with a clinician on a safe, personally suitable target, since very low and very high blood sugar can both be concerning.
