Summary Which omega-3 supplement offers the best balance? Show / hide ↓
This article compares 42 omega-3 products from 32 brands using dose, price, testing, formula, safety, and transparency. It names one product the best overall choice, with 1,280 mg of EPA and DHA, the main omega-3 fats, for about $1.17 per day. Three products share the highest editorial score of 9.3 out of 10, but the scores are judgments, not a scientific standard. The guide suggests looking for at least 1,000 mg of combined EPA and DHA per serving, plus independent testing for rancidity and heavy metals. High doses may affect blood clotting and increase the risk of atrial fibrillation, an irregular heartbeat, so more is not automatically better.
What this means for you: Choose a product with a clearly stated EPA-plus-DHA dose, independent testing, and a reasonable price. The highest score or largest dose alone does not make a supplement the best choice.

What is Omega-3?
Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) are essential long-chain polyunsaturated fats found in fish oil, krill oil, and algae. They are the most studied supplement for cardiovascular health, with multiple large randomized controlled trials showing reductions in triglycerides, blood pressure, and cardiovascular events. EPA and DHA are also key structural components of brain tissue and resolve inflammation through specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs). Most adults do not consume enough EPA/DHA from diet alone.
Evidence grade: A. The single best-supported longevity supplement most people don't take enough of. Read the full evidence review: Omega-3 ingredient page.
How we rank Omega-3 supplements
Every Omega-3 product in our database gets the same overall score, built on six weighted components:
- Dose vs studies (50%): How close the label dose is to the dose used in human trials for Omega-3. Products far above or below the studied dose lose points.
- Transparency (20%): Is the full formula public, with every ingredient amount disclosed, and a published Certificate of Analysis?
- Value (10%): Monthly cost at the studied dose, not the sticker price of the bottle.
- Formulation (10%): Form and co-ingredients compared with the forms used in trials. Unproven delivery claims add nothing.
- Safety (5%): Doses above upper intake levels or with documented adverse-event signals lose points.
- Community (5%): Verified review signals from independent platforms, weighted low and never able to override the evidence components.

What to look for in a Omega-3 supplement
- Dose: Look for at least 1,000 mg combined EPA+DHA per serving. Cardiovascular trials typically use 1,000 to 4,000 mg per day.
- Form: Triglyceride form has better absorption than ethyl ester. Krill oil provides phospholipid-bound omega-3. Algae oil is the only vegan source of direct EPA/DHA.
- Purity: Check for third-party testing showing low oxidation (TOTOX value below 26) and no heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic below safe limits).
- Price: Omega-3 prices range from $8 to $40+ per month. Compare cost per 1,000 mg EPA+DHA, not cost per capsule.
- Testing: Third-party testing is essential for fish oil. Look for IFOS, Friend of the Sea, or equivalent certification.
