Summary Which berberine supplements offer the best value and testing? Show / hide ↓
This ranking compares 14 berberine products from 11 brands on dose, price, testing, transparency, formula, safety, and community feedback. DoNotAge Pure Berberine ranks first with a score of 9.1 out of 10, costing about $30 per month and providing a published certificate of analysis, which is a lab report checking the product’s contents. The next two products score 7.6, with monthly prices of about $20 to $25. Standard berberine hydrochloride, the most studied form, is commonly used at 500 mg two or three times daily. It may modestly improve blood sugar and cholesterol, but the evidence is mainly short term, and it can interact with metformin, statins, and blood thinners while causing digestive side effects.
What this means for you: Choose a reasonably priced standard berberine product with independent testing instead of assuming a more expensive formula works better. Berberine is not a longevity drug, and anyone taking medication should check for interactions first.

What is Berberine?
Berberine is a plant alkaloid found in barberry, goldenseal, and Oregon grape. It activates AMPK, the same cellular energy sensor that metformin targets. Multiple randomized controlled trials show berberine reduces fasting glucose, HbA1c, and LDL cholesterol at doses of 500 mg three times daily. The effect size on HbA1c is comparable to metformin in head-to-head trials. Berberine has poor oral bioavailability (under 5%), and newer formulations (phytosomal, nanoparticle) aim to improve absorption.
Evidence grade: A. Plant-derived AMPK activator; near-drug-strength effects on blood sugar and lipids. Read the full evidence review: Berberine ingredient page.
How we rank Berberine supplements
Every Berberine product in our database gets the same overall score, built on six weighted components:
- Dose vs studies (50%): How close the label dose is to the dose used in human trials for Berberine. Products far above or below the studied dose lose points.
- Transparency (20%): Is the full formula public, with every ingredient amount disclosed, and a published Certificate of Analysis?
- Value (10%): Monthly cost at the studied dose, not the sticker price of the bottle.
- Formulation (10%): Form and co-ingredients compared with the forms used in trials. Unproven delivery claims add nothing.
- Safety (5%): Doses above upper intake levels or with documented adverse-event signals lose points.
- Community (5%): Verified review signals from independent platforms, weighted low and never able to override the evidence components.

What to look for in a Berberine supplement
- Dose: 500 mg two to three times daily, taken with meals. Total 1,000 to 1,500 mg per day.
- Form: Standard berberine HCL is the most studied. Phytosomal formulations (Berberine Phytosome) may improve absorption 2-5x.
- Purity: Look for products with published CoA showing berberine HCL content.
- Price: Berberine is inexpensive. Standard formulations range from $10 to $25 per month. Phytosomal forms cost more.
- Testing: Third-party testing for heavy metals is important for plant-derived supplements.
