What it is

A flavonoid found in strawberries. In mice, high intermittent doses clear senescent (zombie) cells better than quercetin and extend lifespan modestly.

Why people take it

Mouse data is compelling. Human data is very limited, one small trial in COVID-19 patients, one in frailty. Longevity outcomes untested.

Our verdict

The most-hyped 'senolytic' with the weakest human evidence. If used, biohackers typically pulse it (2 days on / month off) rather than daily.

Structure & class

3,3',4',7-tetrahydroxyflavone. Structural analog of quercetin, more lipophilic.

Mechanism & clinical data

Yousefzadeh et al. 2018 (EBioMedicine) showed lifespan extension in mice at 100 mg/kg intermittent. Human RCTs (NCT03430037, NCT03675724) enrolling but few reported outcomes. Bioavailability improved by liposomal/piperine delivery.

Pharmacokinetics

~3 hours; short exposure window.

Dose & forms

Trial dose

What to watch out for

Standard capsules have <5% absorption. Look for liposomal or with piperine.

Safety limits and interactions

When a product exceeds the UL or contains an ingredient with clinically significant interactions, a "Review advised" flag appears on its product page and links here.

Known drug interactions
May potentiate warfarin via competition for glucuronidation; theoretical mild antiplatelet activity warrants caution with anticoagulants and chemotherapy agents.
Safety note
No formal UL and no human toxicity studies exist; animal LD50 exceeds 5,000 mg/kg. Senolytic protocols use pulsed high-dose regimens (e.g., ~20 mg/kg/day for 2 consecutive days), and oral bioavailability is very low (<5%).

Timeline

Regulatory events, evidence grade changes, and key research milestones for Fisetin, most recent first. Studies link to the paper; regulatory entries name and link the responsible authority.

  • 2026-08-07 Evidence grade
    Evidence grade changed: D → C
A 2024 human pilot study (10 participants, 500 mg/day for one week per month over six months) provides preliminary human data on biological aging markers. The AFFIRM-LITE trial (NCT03675724) is an ongoing randomized placebo-controlled pilot testing fisetin as a senolytic in older adults. No large RCTs yet, but human pilot data justifies upgrade from D (mostly animal) to C (mixed/small human trials).
  • 2025-04 Regulatory single source
EU Court sharpens the bar for botanical health claims
A Court of Justice of the European Union ruling in April 2025 further tightened the requirements for how botanical ingredients (herbs, plant extracts) can be marketed with health claims in the EU, effectively removing much of the flexibility of the on-hold list.
  • 2024-06 Regulatory confirmed
EU report identifies 117 supplement substances as potential health risks
The HoA Working Group on Food Supplements (26 European countries) published its first report evaluating 117 substances used in food supplements. Of these, 65 were assessed as likely novel foods, 6 were already regulated, 34 had insufficient data, and 12 were prioritized for Article 8 restriction under Regulation (EC) No 1925/2006. The 12 priority substances include ashwagandha, curcumin, melatonin, piperine, St. John's wort, coumarin, p-synephrine, maca, holy basil, Melaleuca, black cohosh, and L-tryptophan. The report drew on 1,500 RASFF alerts reviewed between 2017 and mid-2022.
  • 2024 Research milestone
    Fisetin pilot 2024 (biological aging)
In a 10-person pilot study, intermittent fisetin dosing (500 mg/day, one week per month for six months) produced mixed effects on biological age with no significant change in telomere length.
  • 2018 Research milestone
Yousefzadeh et al. 2018 (preclinical, EBioMedicine)
This preclinical study (mouse models plus human ex vivo adipose tissue) showed fisetin selectively clears senescent cells and extends median and maximum lifespan in mice, providing the basis for human senolytic trials of fisetin.
  • 2006-12 Regulatory confirmed
    EU Health Claims Regulation adopted
Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 laid down harmonised rules for nutrition and health claims made on foods, including supplements. Only claims listed in the EU Register of authorised claims can be used. Rejected botanical claims are held in a separate on-hold list.
  • 1997 Regulatory confirmed
EU introduces the Novel Food Regulation
Regulation (EC) No 258/97 required any food or food ingredient without a history of consumption in the EU before 15 May 1997 to be authorised before being placed on the market. This is the framework that captures NMN, spermidine as a supplement ingredient, urolithin A, and many other longevity actives.
  • Research milestone
    AFFIRM-LITE (NCT03675724)
This randomized, placebo-controlled pilot trial tests whether two consecutive days of fisetin (20 mg/kg/day) reduces blood inflammation markers in older adults, as a senolytic intervention for frailty.
2026 evidence refresh

Fisetin is a flavonoid senolytic that clears aged cells in mice, but the largest human RCT found no benefit for knee osteoarthritis.

Verified 2026-08-06. We update this section as new peer-reviewed trials land.

Intermittent high-dose fisetin (20 mg/kg for 2 days per cycle) showed no significant benefit over placebo for knee pain, cartilage MRI, physical function, or gait in knee osteoarthritis. source

Best-supported claim

Fisetin's strongest human data is safety, not efficacy. Scott Tashman, Marc Philippon, Grant Dornan, and Johnny Huard's 2025 phase I/II randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 74 people with knee osteoarthritis found intermittent high-dose fisetin caused no significant increase in adverse events versus placebo across 12 months (https://www.ors.org/wp-content/uploads/AM25/429.pdf). That established the dosing strategy is tolerable. Beyond safety, fisetin's senolytic mechanism, clearing senescent cells, has been demonstrated in human tissue only for the related combination dasatinib plus quercetin, not fisetin alone, in LaTonya Hickson's 2019 diabetic kidney disease biopsy study (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6796530/).

Not supported by the evidence base

Marketers position fisetin as a proven senolytic that clears zombie cells and extends healthspan in humans, based on mouse lifespan data. No published human RCT has shown fisetin extends lifespan or clears senescent cells in human tissue on its own. The best-designed human efficacy trial to date, the 2025 knee osteoarthritis RCT, found no significant benefit on pain, cartilage MRI T2 relaxation, physical function, or gait after a year of treatment (https://www.ors.org/wp-content/uploads/AM25/429.pdf). A 2024 study by Eric Lee and colleagues found adding fisetin to dasatinib and quercetin did not clearly improve epigenetic aging markers over dasatinib and quercetin alone, and DQ alone actually increased epigenetic age acceleration on some clocks at 3 and 6 months (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38393697/). Human efficacy trials in cancer survivor frailty (TROFFi) are still ongoing and unpublished as of 2026.

Typical dose

20 mg/kg body weight for 2 consecutive days per cycle (intermittent high-dose senolytic protocol), not a daily maintenance dose

Safety

Fisetin was well tolerated in the 2025 knee osteoarthritis trial: 185 adverse events were reported across 74 subjects, mostly minor (joint pain, nausea, headache, dry mouth), with no significant difference between fisetin and placebo groups (all p>0.5). Four serious adverse events occurred, evenly split between groups, all from unrelated surgeries. Fisetin uses an intermittent hit-and-run dosing strategy rather than daily supplementation, following the senolytic model established in mouse studies. Long-term safety of chronic daily dosing has not been established.

Frequently asked questions

What is Fisetin?

A flavonoid found in strawberries. In mice, high intermittent doses clear senescent (zombie) cells better than quercetin and extend lifespan modestly.

What dose of Fisetin should I take?

The trial dose in published human studies is 500 mg per day, with a range of 100 to 1400 mg per day. Always consult a qualified clinician before starting any supplement.

Is Fisetin safe?

No formal UL and no human toxicity studies exist; animal LD50 exceeds 5,000 mg/kg. Senolytic protocols use pulsed high-dose regimens (e.g., ~20 mg/kg/day for 2 consecutive days), and oral bioavailability is very low (<5%).

What is the best Fisetin supplement?

We track 18 products containing Fisetin. The top-ranked product scores 6.7 out of 10 on our composite scale, which evaluates dose, evidence, price, third-party testing, and transparency. See the comparison table above. Scores are editorial judgments, not a scientific standard.

What is the evidence grade for Fisetin?

Fisetin has evidence grade C, meaning it is backed by mixed or small human trials. Grade A means replicated human RCTs with hard endpoints. Grade B means human RCTs with biomarker outcomes. Grade C means mixed or small human trials. See our evidence grading methodology.
