What it is

A yellow-orange plant compound found in onions, apples, and capers. Being studied as a 'senolytic', a molecule that clears out old, malfunctioning cells that accumulate as we age and drive inflammation.

Why people take it

The theory is exciting: kill off 'zombie cells' and inflammation drops, tissues heal better. Mouse studies show benefits. In humans, most trials use quercetin + dasatinib (a cancer drug) intermittently, not daily supplements.

Our verdict

Safe, cheap, mild anti-inflammatory. Don't expect miracle rejuvenation from daily 500 mg capsules, the interesting senolytic protocols are periodic and use quercetin as part of a combo.

Structure & class

2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-3,5,7-trihydroxy-4H-chromen-4-one. Flavonoid. Bioavailability enhanced by phytosome or lecithin delivery.

Mechanism & clinical data

Hickson et al. 2019 pilot showed dasatinib+quercetin cleared senescent cells in diabetic kidney disease. Standalone senolytic effect at typical supplement doses (500 to 1000 mg/day) is unproven. Anti-inflammatory and antihistamine effects better established.

Pharmacokinetics

~11 hours.

Dose & forms

Trial dose
500 mg
/ day
Range in trials
250 to 1000 mg

Common forms
Powder, Phytosome (Quercefit®), Combined with bromelain

What to watch out for

Plain quercetin dihydrate has poor absorption. Phytosome forms deliver 10 to 20× more into blood.

Safety limits and interactions

When a product exceeds the UL or contains an ingredient with clinically significant interactions, a "Review advised" flag appears on its product page and links here.

Safety note
No formal UL. Considered safe up to 500-1,000 mg/day in most 12-week trials; nephrotoxicity risk emerges primarily above 2,000 mg/day orally, especially in individuals with pre-existing kidney disease. Long-term safety data beyond 12 weeks at doses ≥1,000 mg are lacking.

Where this dose comes from

The trial dose above is our editorial pick from the published human trials for this ingredient. We choose the dose that the best-available studies used on the endpoint most relevant to longevity. The range shows the lowest and highest doses tested in published trials. The landmark studies below are the papers we read to set it. You can click through and check our work.

When new trials publish, our automated sweeps flag them. If a new study materially changes the dose, we update it through editorial review and record the old dose, new dose, and the triggering study in every affected product's recommendation history. The dose is never changed automatically.

Timeline

Regulatory events, evidence grade changes, and key research milestones for Quercetin, most recent first. Studies link to the paper; regulatory entries name and link the responsible authority.

  • 2026-08-07 Evidence grade
    Evidence grade changed: C → B
Multiple human RCTs and two meta-analyses of RCTs confirm efficacy for blood pressure reduction, a longevity-relevant cardiovascular endpoint. The 2016 meta-analysis pooled 7 RCTs (587 patients) and the 2022 update pooled 10 RCTs (841 participants). A registered 30-person pilot trial (NCT05838560) is ongoing for biological aging endpoints.
  • 2025-04 Regulatory single source
EU Court sharpens the bar for botanical health claims
A Court of Justice of the European Union ruling in April 2025 further tightened the requirements for how botanical ingredients (herbs, plant extracts) can be marketed with health claims in the EU, effectively removing much of the flexibility of the on-hold list.
  • 2025 Research milestone
    D+Q pilot trial 2025 (F1000Research)
This registered 30-person pilot trial (NCT05838560) is testing intermittent dasatinib plus quercetin dosing for feasibility and effects on accelerated biological aging and cognitive decline in older adults.
  • 2024-06 Regulatory confirmed
EU report identifies 117 supplement substances as potential health risks
The HoA Working Group on Food Supplements (26 European countries) published its first report evaluating 117 substances used in food supplements. Of these, 65 were assessed as likely novel foods, 6 were already regulated, 34 had insufficient data, and 12 were prioritized for Article 8 restriction under Regulation (EC) No 1925/2006. The 12 priority substances include ashwagandha, curcumin, melatonin, piperine, St. John's wort, coumarin, p-synephrine, maca, holy basil, Melaleuca, black cohosh, and L-tryptophan. The report drew on 1,500 RASFF alerts reviewed between 2017 and mid-2022.
  • 2022 Research milestone
    Quercetin + blood pressure 2022 meta-analysis
An updated meta-analysis of 10 RCTs (841 participants) confirmed quercetin significantly lowers systolic blood pressure in both normotensive and hypertensive adults.
  • 2021-11 Regulatory confirmed
EU classifies encapsulated quercetin-zein as novel food
The EU Commission classified encapsulated quercetin-zein as a novel food because the encapsulation process significantly increases oral absorption and bioavailability, allowing quercetin to cross the blood-brain barrier. Standard quercetin from chemical synthesis or extraction from onions (Allium cepa) remains permitted as a food supplement without novel food authorisation. Quercetin (95%) derived from Dimorphandra mollis was also classified as novel.
  • 2019 Research milestone
Hickson et al. 2019 (senolytics in humans)
In 9 patients with diabetic kidney disease, a 3-day course of dasatinib plus quercetin significantly reduced senescent cell markers and circulating inflammatory (SASP) factors within 11 days.
  • 2016 Research milestone
    Quercetin + blood pressure 2016 meta-analysis
Across 7 RCTs (587 patients), quercetin supplementation significantly reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure, with greater effect at doses ≥500 mg/day.
  • 2006-12 Regulatory confirmed
    EU Health Claims Regulation adopted
Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 laid down harmonised rules for nutrition and health claims made on foods, including supplements. Only claims listed in the EU Register of authorised claims can be used. Rejected botanical claims are held in a separate on-hold list.
  • 1997 Regulatory confirmed
EU introduces the Novel Food Regulation
Regulation (EC) No 258/97 required any food or food ingredient without a history of consumption in the EU before 15 May 1997 to be authorised before being placed on the market. This is the framework that captures NMN, spermidine as a supplement ingredient, urolithin A, and many other longevity actives.
2026 evidence refresh

Quercetin is a plant flavonoid that modestly lowers systolic blood pressure and, combined with dasatinib, clears senescent cells in humans.

Verified 2026-07-24. We update this section as new peer-reviewed trials land.

Human RCT base
40+
peer-reviewed randomised trials
Largest single trial

Quercetin significantly reduced systolic blood pressure by about 3.2 mmHg in hypertensive and normotensive adults; diastolic blood pressure did not change significantly. source

Best-supported claim

The most reliable human evidence for quercetin is a small, consistent reduction in systolic blood pressure. An umbrella review of 5 meta-analyses covering 18 RCTs, plus 5 additional trials, found quercetin significantly lowers systolic blood pressure by about 1.9 mmHg and lowers fasting insulin, but has no effect on diastolic blood pressure, lipids, inflammation markers, body measurements, or insulin resistance (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37654199/). Separately, LaTonya Hickson and colleagues at Mayo Clinic showed that quercetin paired with the cancer drug dasatinib reduces senescent cell markers in human adipose tissue and skin within 11 days of a short 3-day course, the first direct evidence senolytics work in humans (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31542391/). Quercetin alone has not been shown to have this senolytic effect in humans; the evidence is for the drug combination.

Not supported by the evidence base

Quercetin is marketed as a broad anti-aging senolytic and immune booster based on mouse lifespan studies and its role in dasatinib-plus-quercetin protocols. Taken alone, at typical supplement doses, quercetin's human evidence is much narrower. The umbrella review found no significant effect on lipids, inflammation, or insulin resistance despite its reputation as an anti-inflammatory (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37654199/). For exercise performance, a systematic review of 13 studies concluded quercetin supplementation does not improve exercise performance itself, even though marketing often cites its antioxidant profile as an athletic performance driver (https://aber.apacsci.com/index.php/JBRHA/article/view/8162). A 2011 meta-analysis of 254 subjects found a real but tiny effect on endurance capacity, about a 2% improvement over placebo, far smaller than typically implied (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21606866/). Oral bioavailability is also a genuine limitation: absorption of quercetin glucoside ranges from only 3% to 17% in healthy people at 100 mg doses.

Typical dose

500 mg to 1000 mg daily for blood pressure and metabolic effects; senolytic protocols use quercetin 1000 mg total daily (500 mg twice) paired with dasatinib 100 mg for 2-3 days per cycle, under medical supervision

Safety

Oral quercetin has been safe and well tolerated across dozens of RCTs at doses up to 1000 mg/day for 12 weeks, with no serious adverse events reported in blood pressure trials. The dasatinib-plus-quercetin senolytic combination used in Mayo Clinic pilot trials caused no serious adverse events (hospitalization, kidney injury, death) over a 3-day hit-and-run dosing course, but this combination involves a prescription chemotherapy drug and should not be self-administered. Bioavailability is low and highly variable between individuals, which limits predictable dosing from supplements alone.

Interactions worth flagging

  • blood thinners
  • blood pressure medications
  • dasatinib and other chemotherapy agents (senolytic protocols specifically combine these under medical supervision)
  • cyclosporine

A yellow-orange plant compound found in onions, apples, and capers. Being studied as a 'senolytic', a molecule that clears out old, malfunctioning cells that accumulate as we age and drive inflammation.

What dose of Quercetin should I take?

The trial dose in published human studies is 500 mg per day, with a range of 250 to 1000 mg per day. Always consult a qualified clinician before starting any supplement.

Is Quercetin safe?

No formal UL. Considered safe up to 500-1,000 mg/day in most 12-week trials; nephrotoxicity risk emerges primarily above 2,000 mg/day orally, especially in individuals with pre-existing kidney disease. Long-term safety data beyond 12 weeks at doses ≥1,000 mg are lacking.

What is the best Quercetin supplement?

We track 26 products containing Quercetin. The top-ranked product scores 7.8 out of 10 on our composite scale, which evaluates dose, evidence, price, third-party testing, and transparency. See the comparison table above. Scores are editorial judgments, not a scientific standard.

What is the evidence grade for Quercetin?

Quercetin has evidence grade B, meaning it is supported by human RCTs. Grade A means replicated human RCTs with hard endpoints. Grade B means human RCTs with biomarker outcomes. Grade C means mixed or small human trials. See our evidence grading methodology.
